Who will replace Leo Beenhakker as the new Poland coach? “Our team needs a professional coach from Poland,” reply’s the former coach of the Bialo-czerwoni, Jerzy Engel, who is now the PZPN sports director.
After the 0-3 defeat of Poland in Slovenia and the dismissal of Leo Beenhakker, an ongoing search for his successor had begun.
On Tuesday, Polish Football Association spokesman Jakub Kwiatkowski revealed that the the FA had recently received offers from abroad coaches.
“It’s no wonder. Poland is co-hosting the UEFA EURO 2012. Leading a team in such an important tournament is an attractive prospect for a number of foreign trainers.” says Engel.
“When their agents heard about the search for a new Poland coach, they went to work and started to submit offers to us. This is the case for each federation, which is looking for a new coach. Usually they receive around 50-100 proposals from abroad.” admits Engel, adding, however, that in his opinion the best solution would be the choice of a coach from Poland.
“We must consider any nomination, foreigners included, but from what I know, Polish coaches have the best chances. It’s a fair idea. I agree with the famous French coach Aime Jacquet, who suggests bringing in our own coach.”
“His opinion was recently confirmed by the Turkish coach Fatih Terim. He stressed that the Polish national team needs to find it’s identity. And the most help in that would be a Polish coach.”
At the same time the Polish Football Association sports director stressed that he does not intend to re-apply for the position of Poland’s head coach, killing off any speculation that Engel could return as Poland’s new coach.
