LODZ, Poland. May 23 (PSN) –The 32rd round match between Zaglebie Lubin and Widzew Lodz will not come to fruition.
The away side resigned from the game due to financial difficulties. The granting of a walkover will outcome in the drop for Widzew from the 1 Liga.
The Lodz club announced on Friday afternoon of their resignation from the Saturday league match against Zaglebie Lubin, who are strong candidates for promotion to the T-Mobile Ekstraklasa.
On the official website of Widzew the club released a brief statement in regards to the forfeit.
“In view of the difficult financial situation (…) the board of RTS Widzew Lodz SA informs that the Widzew team will not play in the league match of round 32 Zaglebie Lubin – Widzew Lodz, which is scheduled for 05.23.2015. The relevant information was already transferred to the Poland Football Association and Zaglebie Lubin.”
According to several inside sources, Widzew were unable to pay for a bus to transport the team to Lubin.
Widzew Lodz joins MKS Flota Swinoujscie, which was liquidated earlier this week, as one of the clubs relegated from the 2014/2015 1 Liga season.
