BASEL, Switzerland. August 6 (PSN) – Lech Poznan will not play in the UEFA Champions League Group Stage this season.
The Polish champions ruined their chances after experiencing a loss in the first leg (1:3) last week. On Wednesday, it was official after the second leg with FC Basel advancing from the third qualifying round with a 1:0 win.
Birkir Bjarnason scored the lone goal of the match for Basel.
There was calm before the storm. No one from the Polish media had expectations for a victory, much less was there any excitement for the game. This lack of excitement and attitude carried on to the pitch by the players.
As a result, the game was quiet and boring leaving both the fans and players disinterested.
After 90 minutes of play the score was still 0:0, which already was a disappointment as the Kolejorz needed to score at least 3 goals to make up for the loss back in Poznan last week.
Rather it was the Swiss who took the initiative and capitalized on a defensive mistake by the Poles with Bjarnason scoring a game winning goal in stoppage time. The hosts did not impress at all, but did just enough to cope Lech.
