Legia Fall to Barcelona SC in Florida Cup Opener

FORT LAUDERDALE, United States. January 13 (PSN) – Legia Warsaw were defeated 3:2 by Barcelona SC in the tournament opening week of the Florida Cup on Saturday afternoon.

The Polish champions took on the current fifth place Ecuador league outfit in Fort Lauderdale at the Central Broward Stadium.

While Legia started the match with a promising note, having already scored in the 7th minute of the game with a bounce of striker Jaroslaw Niezgoda, things turned for the worst rather quickly. Barcelona SC began to lock down their defense and apply constant pressure to the Legion’s penalty box. This resulted in two goals, both scored in the same fashion of a cross into the penalty box to an unmarked Barcelona player.

Ely Esterilla would go on to scoring Barcelona SC their third of the match only five minutes afterwards, firing a goal just outside the penalty box this time around, completely beating Legia goalkeeper Arkadiusz Malarz in the process. Legia had no response to any of these goals and struggled to even keep the ball. Winger Michal Kucharczyk had one chance to score after having the ball turned over to him by a Barcelona defender’s mistake, but ultimately was unable to capitalize.

After the half, Legia coach Romeo Jozak decided to play a whole new squad for the second half which proved to be the right choice. While still unable to score enough to equalize the game, the second half team posed far more of a threat and gave Barcelona little time and space in their half.

New signing William Remy was able to score for Legia with a well placed long ranger at the end of the game. This goal gave the Polish side a major morale boost but unfortunately there wasn’t enough time left to grab a third goal.

This loss now drop Legia down to 6th place in the tournament standings and a result mathematically eliminating any chance for winning the competition. In addition, Eduardo da Silva was taken off after only 20 minutes into his Legia debut with a serious injury which will see the Brazilian-Croatian striker likely out for the duration of the tournament.

Legia’s next and final game of the Florida Cup will take place on January 20th at Al Lang Stadium in St. Petersburg against Atletico Nacional.
