PKO Ekstraklasa Matchweek 17: No Upset for Stal in Zabrze

ZABRZE, Poland. February 16 (PSN) – Stal Mielec were close to upsetting Gornik Zabrze but failed to hold the result in the seventeenth matchweek of the 2020/2021 PKO Ekstraklasa season.

Hosts Gornik ended up winning 2:1 on Monday against last-in-the-table side Stal Mielec. The visitors surprisingly took the lead at the very beginning of the match after a header from Aleksandr Kolew in the sixth minute. For the entire first half, Stal held out the lone goal result and the belief in Leszek Ojrzynski’s team to pull off an upset in Zabrze was strong. The Mielec side could also had doubled their lead in the first half, but Maciej Domanski failed to convert his penalty kick – a mistake that would later cost his team. Ultimately, this didn’t happen as Gornik’s offence woke up late and crashed Stal’s party. The Miners responded with an equalizer in the 64th minute with a goal from Przemyslaw Wisniewski, and then in the final minutes Piotr Krawczyk sealed the victory. For Gornik this was their first win in league play after four games without three points.
