WARSAW, Poland. May 30 (PSN) – The Ekstraklasa will see Miedz Legnica, Widzew Lodz, and Korona Kielce promoted for next season from the 1 Liga.
Miedz, which previously played in the Polish top flight in 2018, has returned after a three-year absence. The Miedzianka were promoted after winning the 1 Liga, coming first with 77 points after 34 games.
Wojciech Lobodzinski, who played for Miedz in the Ekstraklasa before, later retired and then immediately took up coaching. It wasn’t long until he was then brought in as Legnica’s first team gaffer.
Interestingly enough, it was under him Miedz were able to dominate the 1 Liga and return to the Ekstraklasa so quickly.
“There were a lot of emotions this season. At first I thought it would be hard for us to put together a team that could be capable of advancing to the Ekstraklasa, but despite all the odds we faced at the beginning, it all worked out. The boys definitely deserve respect, because they showed not only great character, but also football quality this season.” said Lobodzinski after Miedz’s promotion clinching 1:0 win over Widzew.
Meanwhile, not long after that match it would be Widzew who ended up joining Miedz as the second team to make the jump to the Ekstraklasa.
After a tight race for second place, the Widzewiacy were finally able to capture it with 62 points on their account, beating Arka Gdynia for the spot by just a point more.
Widzew were able to secure their promotion after winning an intense 2:1 with Podbeskidzie Bielsko-Biala, bringing them back to the Ekstraklasa since the 2013/14 season.
Lastly, Koronia Kielce were the final team to join in on the promotion.
Despite finishing only 4th with 56 points to their name, the Kielce outfit were quite effective in the promotion play-offs. Their 3:2 win against Chrobry Glogow in play-off final saw them earn their comeback to the Polish top flight after spending just two years in the 1 Liga.
